Women in Tech

Women in Tech continues to cause debate due to the low numbers in comparison to their male counterparts.

Thankfully numbers are starting to increase with the UK government and many large companies now starting to make strides in addressing the gender inequality in this sector.

Anyone with a job role in Tech (or IT as it has been traditionally referred to), no longer has the stigma of being considered a nerd camped in a dark room surrounded by half eaten pizzas. These days Tech is cool with lots of interesting and financially rewarding career roles.

Women are definitely starting to get more involved both through a desire for a career in the sector but also as a result of support (albeit somewhat limited) from industry in general. This has to be a positive for increasing the figures of women in tech in the UK and hopefully this trend will continue.

Although the medium-term trend shows female numbers increasing in IT professional roles in 2017, the numbers of men working in these roles are increasing at a faster rate, jumping by 60,000 in the past year. This means the female proportion of the IT professional workforce was still only at 16% in 2019.

When looking at the number of women working as IT Technicians, the figures have increased from 2016 – 2019. However, because the number of men working as IT Technicians has increased at a rapid rate, the overall percentage of women working as IT Technicians remained static between 2016 and 2017, increased slightly in 2018, but has remained static again.

Some Progress (but slow)

However, there is some progress being made as the number of women in tech has continued to increase over the past year, with 31% of UK tech jobs held by women, according to a February 2021 report released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).


Although the data set shows progress, there are other statistics that show that women in the UK still seem to be underrepresented in IT professional roles.

Preliminary data from the Harvey Nash Tech Survey 2021 shows that gender diversity of UK technology leaders remains broadly unchanged from last year, with women representing just 10% in those roles. The full report, due to be launched later this month, surveyed more than 800 tech professionals in the UK and more than 1,700 globally.


Harvey Nash asked tech pros in the UK how much they agreed with the statement that the tech industry is doing enough to promote female participation in technology; 40% of those surveyed in the UK disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement.

When the figures were broken down by gender, the report found that more women than men in technology in the UK disagreed with the statement. More than half (54%) of female tech professionals in the UK feel the industry is not doing enough; of that group, almost three times as many women in the UK strongly disagree the tech sector is doing enough.
